Bristol is a city in south-western England, administered by a Unitary Authority since the abolition (1996) of the County of Avon. Before 1373 the city was parts of Gloucestershire and Somerset, but in that year it was made an independent county by Edward III of England, who proclaimed "that the said town of Bristol withall be a County by itself and called the county of Bristol for ever".
